I have been away otherwise I'd have explained sooner that this posting was occasioned by my encounter with a musical setting of the new translation which embodied an inappropriate relationship between text and music. It is this characteristic - of the musician having failed to appreciate the meaning of the text which I consider the key failing in much of the liturgical music provided over the last forty years. A solemn text such as "We proclaim your death..." is poorly served by marriage to a jolly jingle such as might normally accompany an advert for toothpaste or breakfast cereal.
