Yes. I am sorry but it is true. Another "Catholic" celebrity bites the dust. Anyone doubting this should check out the Desert Island Discs broadcast on the BBC i-player. What this poor lady fails to recognise is that when God gives someone a particular vocation it is for a particular purpose. In the case of a hermit it may well be to prevent them causing scandal by what they may say or do in public.
Sister Wendy Beckett clearly supports the view that on subjects like abortion, contraception and women priests the Church takes time to adjust- with the obvious implication that the world is right on these matters!

I loved this poem as a child. It still brings tears to my eyes, too.

I agree. She came across as self indulgent and ultra patronising as far as the Holy Father was concerned. The trouble is, so many people will believe that she is a member of the one true Church.
ReplyDeleteSr. Wendy is one of the most dangerous religious women on the media because she presents her own relationship with God...her "insights" from her prayers and study...as the ultimate authority on what she should believe. In this case she is not an orthodox Catholic. I heard part of that programme and there was also a lot of bilge coming from the interviewer (sorry forgot her name)....BILGE!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Richard and Father John. I had just come out of mass and switched on the radio in the car and could hardly believe my ears. I have always found Sister Wendy cringe-inducing but have tried to suppress my distaste on the grounds of her being of the household of the faith and, despite uttering codswallop, presumably doing something good for God. I was appalled at her response to the question. For someone who is alleged to have both achieved a first at Oxford AND scaled the heights of contemplative prayer...words fail me!
ReplyDeleteAs for Desert Island Discs- well the BBC have never recovered from the loss of Roy Plomley. The presenter is a jumped up continuity announcer called Kirsty Young and, no, she isn't very bright. On more than one occasion I've had the impression that she has had her list of questions to get through but isn't particularly interested in the response.

DeleteI am surprised at the lack of charity towards Sister Wendy, though I agree she made an unfortunate misjudgement in her reply to Kirsty Young's deplorable trick question. But she did not actually cross the line from orthodoxy. This was the mentality of the disgruntled clergy on the eve of Vatican II. Mostly however she struck me as a truly good and innocent person.
ReplyDeleteIf Devil's Advocates are back in the 22nd century, then those remarks to Kirsty Youn will give them ammunition. But I don't think it will be enough. She is a saint in our midst and we should, prudently and moderately, rejoice.
The question was stupid but Sr. Wendy's willingness to opine upon the Anglicans' difficulties was imprudent to begin with. I was, frankly, appalled at this (supposedly) holy person's desire to please the interviewer to the extent of wishing away so many issues upon which the Church is at variance with the world in general and the BBC in particular. Is this the kind of attitude that makes her, in BBC eyes, a "tame" Catholic?
DeleteWell let's all agree to pray for her, as she no doubt does for us. That surely is what Catholics should do.
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
